What size LED driver do I need?
Before you go out and pick either a 12 V or 24 V LED driver, there are a few things to ask yourself about the LED product you’re about to use. Using the wrong LED could result in system failure, so you must pick the right one.
What voltage do I need?
Your LED product will specify whether it runs on 12V or 24V, so make sure you purchase the correct driver. Running a 12V LED driver with a 24V product won’t work at all, and running a 24V driver with a 12V product will cause the lights to be brighter short-term, but the much higher operating temperature will very quickly reduce their life.
What wattage do I need?
An LED driver’s wattage refers to its maximum output capacity, so try to get a driver with a wattage capability of around 10% more than you need.
Where are you installing your driver?
If you’re installing your 12 V LED driver somewhere outdoors, you may need to look into water-resistant options. You’ll also need a water-resistant driver for laundries, bathrooms, and kitchens.
Are you going to want to dim your lights?
If you’d like your LED lights to have dimming capabilities, you’ll need to buy a driver that provides that option. If you’re unsure as to which 12 V LED driver to buy, send us an enquiry online and we’ll help you find the right LED solution for you.
What Can I Use A 12V LED Driver For?
Several LED lights use an external LED driver 12V, but make sure of the voltage before buying a driver. Remember; to run a 12V device, you need a 12 V LED driver. Examples of 12V devices include;
- LED strip lights
- Accent lighting for indoors and outdoors
- Backlighting for signs
- LED lamps
FAQs About 12V LED Drivers
As one of Australia’s leading suppliers of LED lights and control gear, the Linear Lux team is always answering questions about our LED drivers. If you’ve got a question, see if you can see it answered below.
What is an LED driver?
An LED driver is a device that regulates power to an LED or a string of LEDs. They protect LEDs from fluctuations in voltage or currents, and they allow for low-voltage LED light to be used on high-voltage systems.
Are there different types of LED driver?
You can buy either constant voltage drivers or constant current drivers in 12V or 24V. An LED on it’s own requires a constant current to operate correctly. In most instances LEDs have circuitry which allows them to be operated with a constant voltage. Constant voltage is by far the easiest and fool-proof method of operating many LEDs in a single installation.
What happens if I use the wrong driver?
There’s a chance your LED lights could overheat, malfunction, or be irreversibly damaged, especially if you’re using a 24V driver with a 12V LED product. On the other hand, if you’re using a 12 V LED driver with a 24V LED, they simply won’t turn on at all.
Why should I switch to LED lighting?
With LED lighting, you can make your lighting more energy-efficient, you can have more control over settings and visibility, and you’re investing in a more long-term, durable option.
