What Is An LED Driver?

In simple terms, an LED driver is a device that regulates power to an LED light or a string of LED lights. It’s an essential component of an LED installation, and without it, your system simply won’t work. LEDs require drivers for two reasons; 

• They rectify higher voltage. LEDs are designed to run on lower voltage direct current electricity; usually anywhere between 12-24V. However, in most instances the supply voltage is alternating current electricity, between 120-277V. An LED driver rectifies this, changing the higher-voltage alternating current to a lower voltage direct current. 
• They protect LEDs from fluctuations in both voltage and current. An LED light output is proportional to its current supply, and LEDs are rated to operate within a very specific range. A change in voltage could cause a shift in current supplied to the LED. This change results in changes to the LED light output and could cause the light to degrade faster due to the LED’s increased temperature. 

Different Kinds Of LED Drivers

There are two main types of LED driver, constant voltage and constant current, and each works a little differently and aren’t interchangeable. Here’s a quick run-down on each. 

• Constant voltage drivers. These drivers are for LED products that require a consistent and steady set voltage. Constant voltage drivers are perfect for LED products that already have built-in current drivers and simply need consistency in voltage. Constant voltage drivers make an ideal LED driver for a strip light, as they ensure all the lights receive the same amount of power from the driver. Typically, constant voltage drivers are used for; 
  • Accent lighting
  • Illuminating landscapes
  • Backlighting for advertising signs
  • Retail shelf lighting
• Constant current drivers. In contrast to the constant voltage drivers, constant current drivers are designed to manage the current coming into the LED’s diode. It also helps regulate the amount of forward current between LEDs, preventing malfunction and overheating. Constant current LED drivers can be found in any number of LED configurations. Typically, constant voltage drivers are used for;
  • Downlights
  • Deck lights
  • Small cabinet lights
