Choosing your LED power source 

Your LED strip will require a constant current LED driver or a constant voltage power supply. Regulating the current and voltage supply to your LED lights will keep them running safely and maximise their use and lifetime.

LED lighting power supplies are usually driven by one of three options; 

1. A constant current LED driver
2. A constant voltage LED power supply 
3. Or a Cascade connection of a CV power supply and a DC-DC converter. 

The power requirements for your LED lighting project will depend on your LED lighting product and your intended result. 

LED drivers 

LED Drivers are a powerful and safe power supply for LED lights. When selecting your driver, check the power output is higher than your LEDs (this will be the voltage listed on your product packaging or tag). If the LED driver is running at full capacity to power the lights, it is working harder and may result in a shorter life span. 

When selecting the right driver for your LED power supply, you should consider the style of fitting and where the lighting will be placed — for example, backlit signs, strips are hidden under a cabinet, and hanging ceiling lights will each have different requirements and you may want to hide the power source or have it fitted nearby. You should also consider the length of your LED strip lighting, as this may alter the power requirements. 

Enclosed power supplies

An enclosed LED strip power supply holds a circuit for switching AC-DC current within a metal mesh frame. The power source can be hardwired or can have a simple power chord connection to plug in at a wall powerpoint. 

DC-DC converters  

Mean Well DC-DC converter power supplies range from 10-350W in single, dual and triple outputs. DC-DC converters can either step up conversion or step down conversion and will generally have a wide range of conversion depending on the desired output voltage.
